Snow In The Mountains!

I just wanted to update everyone on the current ramp situation.  We received a couple of inches of snow over the weekend and that has put a damper on the ramp harvesting.  It is supposed to start warming up mid week, so we should be back on top of things soon!

We didn’t get to ship out very many orders this weekend due to the cold weather, snow, and frozen ground. I do apologize for that. We are trying to get your ramps to you as soon as possible. I appreciate everyone’s patience while we work on mother natures terms.

Wild Ramps Are Now Shipping For 2016

As I posted last week, I expected ramps would be ready to ship out within a week.  They seem to be growing quickly, so I plan on shipping out the first boxes of ramps the week of 3/21.

Please note that these first week ramps will be the smaller yet stronger variety. They still do not have a large amount of green on them, but it is at this stage they are at their tastiest (according to the locals- myself included). The smaller ramps look like this. Some have more green, some have less green, but they are full of flavor. This is the size that most locals prefer to eat them. This is when they are most tender.

If you prefer the larger leafier ramps, you will have to wait another week or two to place your order. If you want the large ramps, please do not order now. or your ramps may be smaller than you expected.

If you like the smaller more pungent plants, please feel free to order now.

Ramp Bulbs Are Still Shipping

It is now mid February and the time for harvesting and eating ramps is getting very close. I would guess six weeks away if the snow melts off quickly. In the meantime, we are still shipping out ramp bulbs. I dug a box full them earlier this week, and have they are ready to go. If you are waiting to buy bulbs, now would be the time to do it as I don’t know if I will be digging any more (bulbs) in the next few weeks. However, I do have a bunch on hand right now that I need to ship out.

Please visit the Ramp Bulb Order Page to place your order.

Ramp Bulbs For Sale – Now Shipping

Back by popular demand, ramp bulbs are here again.

Due to the ridiculously warm weather we have had this month, the ramp bulbs have began to grow. Now is the perfect time to get yours and get them planted before the ground freezes (if it freezes where you live), or get them planted and watch them start growing if you live in a warmer climate.

Head on over to the Ramp Bulb Order Page and get yourself some!

Wild Ramps

If you have ramps in your area and want to dig them yourself, please remember a few key points in harvesting in a sustainable matter.

While many argue over what constitutes a healthy ramp population in a forest patch, I think it is best to harvest conservatively. Studies show that only 5 to 10 percent of the ramps in a patch should be harvested each year to ensure their future survival. When I harvest ramps, I do the following:

  1. Harvest only the largest ramps in a clump (ramps grow in clumps of 5 to 10). This assures that the smaller plants are left to mature and go to seed.
  2. If there are a number of large ramps in a clump, take—at most—only half the plants. By leaving some older ramps, it guarantees that the clump will recover.
  3. When harvesting, keep moving around the patch. This assures that you won’t accidentally harvest too many ramps from one location.

Taking these precautions guarantees that harvesting is done in a sustainable manner.
