Ramps, or wild leeks, are a member of the lily family and resemble scallions with their wide leaves and small, white bulbs tinged a rusty red. The entire plant is edible and when harvested, it’s uprooted from the ground, bulb and all.
Chefs and home cooks go gaga over them. Their pungent smell and flavor, a cross between garlic and onion, has earned them the nickname “little stinkers.”
The folk medicine reputation which holds both Ramps and Wild Leeks to be powerful healers turns out to be well deserved. They are high in Vitamins C and A, and full of healthful minerals and have the same cholesterol-reducing compounds found in garlic and other members of this family.
Growing up in a small town of about 150 people in the south eastern part of West Virginia where ramps were a part of life, I wasn’t aware at that time that there were so many people that couldn’t get their hands on these things. I couldn’t believe that there weren’t many people selling them online either. There was ONE other website that I found selling ramps at the time (way back in 2008), so I can’t claim to be the first one…but I’m pretty sure I was the second one.
